SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 19, 2023) — Bay Area metal legends FORBIDDEN are reborn! FORBIDDEN are beyond thrilled to reveal their first and only European appearance this year will be at Belgium’s Alcatraz Metal Festival in August. The band is already laying the groundwork for some very exciting news and announcements, but right now they are focusing on Alcatraz and rehearsing to give Europe the very best performance possible.
FORBIDDEN’s Craig Locicero talks about the band’s rebirth, “First off, I did NOT see this coming. When Forbidden quietly disbanded the second time in 2012, I figured it was over. While I always apply the “never say never” mantra to my life, Russ made it clear that he was completely finished with touring. My wingman and main dude from the conception of Forbidden Evil, Russ was my mentor and the guy who bought me beer when I was 15! I couldn’t imagine Forbidden without him, so I had little hope of a future with Forbidden. Today Russ is happily retired and living the sober life. I have nothing but love for that and him. Everyone needs to respect his wishes like we do.
So then ….. fast forward 11 years after our last show, Bay Area vocal talent Norman Skinner walks in to help us rehearse and sing a few thrash classics for the Bay Area Interthrashional set at Dynamo MetalFest 2022. WHAMMO! That’s when it all happened by accident. Truly. Then it happens AGAIN when Norman sings Chalice of Blood onstage alongside Warbringer at the one Bay Area show of Bay Area Interthrashional. Holy fuck! We will go into detail thoroughly in the upcoming weeks. It’s an amazing and organic progression story to tell.
I now can announce that alongside my brothers Matt Camacho (bass) and Steve Smyth (guitar) we are officially introducing Norman Skinner (vocals) and Chris Kontos (drums) to the Forbidden family. As far as Kontos goes, he’s well known as one of the Bay’s very best and most respected drummers. Chris’s work in Machine Head and Attitude Adjustment alone are legendary. Historically he’s sat behind the kit in with Exodus, Death Angel, and Testament to name few. I’ve been lucky enough to play music with Chris in the past and present as well most recently with punk legends The Boneless Ones. We work amazingly well together and have remained great friends for over 30 years. In a long line of amazing drummers… Bostaph, Jacobs, Hoglan, Hernandez and Horn… Kontos is the perfect fit for Forbidden
Having 5 people all moving the same direction with enthusiasm and positivity. It’s all I’ve ever wanted with Forbidden. Making the seemingly impossible, possible.
This is not a reunion, it’s a rebirth.”
Originally founded in 1985 as Forbidden Evil by singer Russ Anderson, guitarists Craig Locicero & Robb Flynn, basses John Tegio and drummer Jim Pittman, the quintet started playing house parties and Bay Area clubs such as the Legendary Ruthie’s Inn soon after.
After a couple of lineup changes (Paul Bostaph / drums & Matt Camacho / bass) in ’86, the band quickly rose through the ranks of Bay Area Thrash to gain a massive following and worldwide notoriety.
In 1986, the band added Glen Alvelais as the second guitarist. It was this lineup that cemented itself into the Bay Area scene and soon after recorded 1988 release ‘Forbidden Evil’ for Combat Records changing the band’s name to simply Forbidden.
In May of ’89 while on a European tour with Sacred Reich, Forbidden played their first appearance at the Legendary Dynamo Open Air in Eindhoven, Netherlands. It was here that Forbidden made their European mark and recorded the Raw Evil EP.
The band returned Stateside and replaced Alvelais with Tim Calvert. Calvert was a missing ingredient that brought the band closer together asa team. They continued to tour the U.S. first with Exodus and then again with Sacred Reich with Calvert on second guitar.
The band went on to release Twisted Into Form in 1990, Distortion in 1994 and Green in 1996 however the band having gone though many lineup changes disbanded in 1997.
In 2008 Craig being inspired at a screening of the movie Get Thrashed, called the other members of the band and suggested getting back on stage to see if they could reignite the Forbidden machine. With Anderson, Locicero, Camacho back in the mix along with new additions Glen Alvelais and Gene Hoglan they played two sold out Death Angel shows in San Francisco.
Steve Smyth came into the mix in place of Alvelais and Mark Hernandez took Hoglan’s place, the band then released Omega Wave, the 5th in the catalog and went on a US tour with Overkill. European festivals were next but afterwards Hernandez had to walk away due to personal reasons leading to a tour cancelation.
Sasha Horn was the answer to fill the drummer’s spot.
After playing Bonded By Baloff with Exodus and one Bay Area show, Forbidden embarked for Chile to play the Metal Fest in Santiago. It was on this flight back home that Russ informed the band that he couldn’t tour anymore because of the physical toll it was taking on him. With that, the band dissolved once again for 11 years.
Fast forward to 2023. The once improbable and impossible happened. Forbidden is reforming with new blood! Locicero, Camacho & Smyth remain from the Omega Wave lineup.
New vocalist Norman Skinner will take the elite position that belonged to Russ Anderson. Norman shocked everyone who witnessed his performance of Chalice of Blood with LA thrashers Warbringer accompanying him as the band. It was undeniable to all in attendance. Norman grew up in the Bay Area. His first thrash metal show was seeing Forbidden at the Omni. Russ would point to Norman at shows and call him “Little Russ” on the mic. It could ONLY be Norman Skinner that stands aside the band.
The Bay Area thrash / punk drum Legend Chris Kontos takes over the drum throne. In a long line of world renown drummers, Kontos is the most logical & qualified man for the job. Bostaph, Jacobs, Hoglan, Hernandez, Horn… World class talents. Now Kontos.

Few Bands in the history of Rock N’ Roll have ever incited the love, the hate, the raw emotional effect this Band has had on the world. From the very beginning, in the small venues of Los Angeles California, and later to the numerous countries worldwide that banned these Winged Assassins from performing live, the Band’s unique style of Shock and Rock caused Religious organizations, Local City Councils, Parliaments, and the Washington D.C. Senate to hold hearings in an effort to bar this group from selling records and trashing stages everywhere they played.
The band’s founding member, frontman Blackie Lawless, has led the group as its lead vocalist and primary songwriter since its beginning. His unique brand of visual, social and political comment took the group to worldwide heights and sold millions of records alongside a legacy of sold out shows across the globe for 4 decades.
Joined by bassist Mike Duda and guitarist Doug Blair, whose tenures in the band span 26 and 18 years respectively, along with drummer extraordinaire Aquiles Priester, will take the Band and the Fans back to where it all started. Complete with the stage show extravaganza that many fans never saw live.
Witness Live the Winged Assassins spectacle of “SHOCK and ROLL” as they take you Back…Back to the Beginning!

We are pleased to announce that Finnish melodic death metal newcomer SHADE OF SORROW are the latest talent to collaborate with M-Theory Audio and we look forward to the completion of their debut album.
The one-man project is spearheaded by multi-instrumentalist Mika Kankainen, the former drummer of Finnish bands WWOC, Soul Terror, and Warceremony. With SHADE OF SORROW, Mika plays all instruments including drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, while also handling vocals showcasing his immense talent and virtuosity.
“My dream came true as M- Theory Audio contacted me and proposed a collaboration with Shade of Sorrow,” explains Mika. “I know they have a huge amount of professional experience in the field of music business, and I really think that the company has a heartful purpose of lifting promising bands and music up for the masses. Needless to say, I´m super stoked about this collaboration and will make sure that we will get a hell of a debut album to release! There is a lot of passion, big dreams and a huge work ethic behind this project and I’m really looking forward for the future release and collaboration with M-Theory Audio!”
The genesis of this band started back in 2017 when demo songs were sent to friend and collaborator Tuomas Saukkonen (Wolfheart, Before the Dawn, Dawn of Solace, etc.) who promptly agreed to produce. Fast forward to 2020, their busy schedules finally lined up and they went into the studio to record the first two SHADE OF SORROW songs — “No Return” and “Fabricated Hope,” each receiving glowing reviews. Both songs were recorded, mixed and mastered by Esa Uusimaa (Wolfheart, Rain of Acid, Crowen) with vocals produced by Juha Kylmanen (Full Nothing, For My Pain…) from Whiteleaf Studios. Those two songs were then followed up by a stand-alone digital single “Meteor” in 2022, which Tuomas from Wolfheart played some acoustic guitar on. Videos were made for all 3 songs, with a highlight being “No Return,” which gives you a great taste of what’s to come and can be seen HERE.
All 3 songs will be available on the forthcoming full-length release, along with 6 new ones once again produced by Saukkonen.

Grand Design continue to hold the perfect element that bring hooks, breaks and choruses to the forefront. Hands down God Bless Rawk ’n’ Roll is a classic. Frontman Pelle Saether says about the second single from the upcoming album: “God Bless Rawk ‘n’ Roll has that typical, well known Grand Design sound with a chorus that will blow your mind! The song is about the band being on the road, touring, meeting fans. It’s all about rawk n roll – and we loooove it.”
GRAND DESIGN, the Swedish AOR/melodic rock sensation, are back with their long- awaited 6th album RAWK that will hit the streets on Friday April 21, 2023. The album was produced by Pelle Saether and recorded at Studio Underground Sweden between January and September 2022. This album is the perfect follow up to their last album V (2020).
RAWK has that signature GRAND DESIGN sound that has made them one of the top artists in the Swedish melodic rock scene. The 11 songs on the album are packed with unforgettable choruses, shredding guitar work and a superb production. Erik Grawsiö from Swedish act Månegarm and Veith Offenbächer from German act Dawn of Destiny appear as guests on one of the albums highlights, Carry on my wind. Again the whole band have put in 100% and we have a great feeling about this album!
We are very pleased to say that we have visited Blaze in the hospital. His spirits are high and his sense of humour remains intact! He is currently waiting on news about his surgery and is optimistic for the future. We wish Blaze a full and quick recovery.
Nevertheless, with Blaze likely to be in recovery for several months, this blows a big hole in our touring plans and therefore we are beginning the process of booking shows for Absolva. We are open for offers for headline shows and/or festivals in UK & Europe.
Meantime, we had stocked up on merch ahead of the original shows, so if possible it would be a big help if you would please buy online items which you might have bought on the tour. Please check out our webshop to see our ‘Stand Your Ground’ T-shirts & more www.absolva.com
Rock Candy Magazine Issue 37 Out Now Featuring METALLICA
MARCH 31, 2023 — As thrash legends Metallica return with a new album, ‘72 Seasons’, Rock Candy Mag goes back to 1986 to look at the band’s classic ‘Master Of Puppets’ over 14 pages. Guitarist Kirk Hammett discusses the making of the album, how it changed Metallica’s career trajectory, and how he looks back on ‘Master…’ today.“We weren’t trying to make an album that 35 or so years on people would put on and think still sounded great,” Hammett tells Rock Candy Mag editor Howard Johnson. “We didn’t set out to do anything, really. We were just trying to make the best album we possibly could and that’s what came out.”Released on 3 March 1986, ‘Master Of Puppets’ was the thrash band’s third album – recorded in Denmark with producer Flemming Rasmussen – and it went on to sell over six million copies in the US alone.“From a technical viewpoint, when I listen to the album I’m really surprised at how good it sounds so long after the fact,” says Hammett. “The recording of the album, the recording of the songs, the production… it all holds up still.”‘Master Of Puppets’ proved to be Cliff Burton’s swansong with Metallica. The bassist sadly died on 27 September 1986 in a coach accident while on tour promoting the album.“Cliff’s contribution to ‘Master Of Puppets’ was very melodic and very musical,” explains Hammett. “His contribution wasn’t so much the big heavy riffs. It was all melody bass, and it was a lot of really, really cool stuff. When Cliff went it was the end of an era, and we all knew it. We knew it.”More than 35 years after it was first released, ‘Master Of Puppets’ is an acknowledged classic of the thrash genre and proudly sits in the US Library Of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry on account of being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”Hammett thinks he knows why.“A lot of the music from that time now sounds samey and similar,” he says. “But there’s really nothing on ‘Master Of Puppets’ that dates it to any particular period – sound-wise, production-wise, recording-wise. ‘Master Of Puppets’ is my favourite of all the albums we’ve ever done.” You can read our 14-page Metallica special, together with fascinating stories about L.A. Guns, Kansas, Bad English, Winger and many others in issue 37 of Rock Candy Mag. ICED EARTH release video for single ‘Prophecy’, out now, release 2 new EPs ‘Hellrider’ and ‘I Walk Among You‘ on 28th April, out on ROAR! Rock Of Angels Records
Check out the ‘Prophecy‘ video: https://youtu.be/DRA9STMkdHk The track is taken from the band’s upcoming EP “Hellrider” that will be released on 28th April on various vinyl formats, and will also be released as a two-in-one digipack CD and 2LP Picture disc combo along with the “I Walk Among You” EP.
Fans of American metal act Iced Earth have long hoped for a new sign of life from their icons. On 28 April 2023, the wait will be over at last: The band has announced the release of two new EPs on ROAR! Rock Of Angels Records. Entitled ‘Hellrider’ and ‘I Walk Among You’, these releases will include rare recordings from the transition phase between singer Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens’ and predecessor/successor Matt Barlow in 2007 and 2008, a particularly exciting and eventful period in Iced Earth’s band history.
The ‘Hellrider’ EP consists of the songs ‘Prophecy’, ‘Birth Of The Wicked’ and ‘The Coming Curse’, originally from the album ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ (1998), voted one of the best power metal records of all time by Metal Hammer. In late summer 2007, all three tracks were re-recorded, featuring Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens.
The second EP ‘I Walk Among You’ includes the studio tracks ‘Setian Massacre’, ‘A Charge To Keep’ and ‘The Clouding’ from the 2007 album ‘Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part I)’, which were remixed and remastered in 2008 and feature the recently-returned Matt Barlow. In addition, there are the live tracks ‘Dark Saga’, ‘Pure Evil’ and ‘Iced Earth’, cut at the 2008 Graspop Metal Meeting and also featuring Barlow.
Iced Earth comment on the EP’s: “Before now, these releases hadn’t been issued on anything other than CD. Now they’ve been remastered, with new artwork, new mastering, new formats on vinyl, picture disc, and they’ll be available for digital download for the first time.”
Both EP’s will be released on April 28, 2023 on various vinyl formats and will also be released as a two-in-one digipack CD and 2LP Picture disc combo!
